HIT THE ROAD JACK 1987

This appeared after the 13th Anniversary tours. Apart from being one more in a continuing series of Residential cover version singles, it doesn't attach itself to any greater project (which is good sometimes, I think). The backing vocals of Laurie Amat, Jeanette Sartain and Olan Jones are wonderful, as are the horn arrangments. The whole thing is powered along by a huge clunking flanged loop of synth-rhythm, and on the 12″ there is a special almost dance mix. "Almost dance" yes - it's in 6/4 time! The b-side is another cover version: Beethoven's Fur Elise, delicately handled as For Elsie, with an elastic band bassline - tasteful huh?
